History of the Blue Star Banner Program
In February 2017, the city of Crystal Lake and the Chamber of Commerce adopted the Blue Star Banner Program to honor active members of the military who are from Crystal Lake as well as city government employees who actively serve our nation. Personalized 6′ X 3′ banners are displayed along Heroes Row to underscore the patriotism that makes our nation great and the important contributions made by the families of these individuals, all sacrificing together for the greater good of our nation.
The program is a 501©(3) charitable organization which accepts banner nomination forms from Crystal Lake families with active service members. Once approved, 6’ X 3’ personalized banners displaying the honoree’s name, rank, and branch of service are hung along a section of Rt. 14 now known officially as Heroes Row. After a period of months, the banners are taken down and given, free of charge, to the families of the honorees in a formal Presentation Ceremony presided over by Donna McAnally, the program’s president, and Crystal Lake Mayor Haig Haleblain. The recognition of these service members is the city’s way of thanking them for their service and a reminder to our citizens that we owe these individuals for our continued freedom.
Donations and Sponsorships from families as well as businesses are welcomed by the program. Sponsorship in The Blue Star Banner Program is available to those who wish to recognize active military members who live in Crystal Lake or are employed within their business. As a sponsor, you are making an important contribution to ensuring active military men and women are recognized for making their sacrifice in protecting our country and also highlighting our military’s vital role in training our future leaders. Sponsorship forms outline the four levels of Sponsorship and the benefits at each level to the sponsor via social media, the program website, events at which we appear, and public relations presentations. Another goal of the program is to help bridge the gap between the civilian and military community. Bringing to the attention of the civilian residents a better understanding of the different lifestyle members of the military branches must lead, helps them understand the sacrifices they make in order to keep our nation safe. It is the price of our continued freedom that others are selflessly paying for us. It is a great privilege for the Blue Star Banner Program to celebrate our hometown heroes. Please consider donating to this very worthy program.
