The event also features a demonstration of the clay oven located outside the home’s kitchen where a park district employee baked bread and potatoes.  The home’s kitchen garden is filled with herbs, food items, flowers for cutting, and a large number of medicinal plants from the mid-1800s as well as some known to have been used in much earlier times.  The grounds are beautiful and peaceful with shady spots to sit and enjoy the natural surroundings.  Local Veterans groups, Veterans assistance groups, and the Quilts of  Valor group joined us at this very special event.

It was a very nice way to spend an afternoon celebrating our local military history, listening to patriotic music as well as music from the 40s era.  A moving ceremony dedicated to the individuals who made and currently keep us a free people was well attended and appreciated by all who came.
